In this environmental activism by design studio, we worked with the San Jacinto Girl Scouts Council of the Houston Area to develop long-term design strategies for their newly-acquired 7-acre site on Galveston Island and design-build a fire circle in the span of a semester. They began by developing a master plan that would be implemented over a 10-year period. Our work needed to be mindful of the Gulf Coast’s unique ecology while encouraging and enhancing outdoor interaction for the girls that increase their knowledge + appreciation of local ecologies.
The long term goal for the Girl Scouts was to restore the former cattle grazing land to a more native coastal prairie. To help accomplish this we proposed discovery trails in what would become different coastal biomes—coastal prairie, wetlands, and live oak mottes. We developed native grass and wildflower proposals that would be planted by the scouts.
Process
This is an observation deck I developed for an independent assignment in the Gulf Coast Design Lab. The Corten steel slats are meant to rust with the coasts climate and reinforce the verticality of the tall grasses
This is an Greenhouse I independently designed for the group masterplan is constructed with accessible and affordable materials to allow ease of replacement with the wood deteriorates.
