The parklets are part of the San Jose Al Fresco Initiative, which aims to revitalize San Jose post-COVID. The Knight Foundation, a non-profit that offers grants in the arts and communities, along with the San Jose Office of Economic Development and the San Jose Downtown Association, will offer customizable parklets to restaurants at a subsidized rate.
The design package is focused on maintaining an interchangeable modular kit of parts. We’ve created a lean set of modules, including 4 seating elements, 4 bar elements, 2 Wall elements, and a planter. A total of 11 different modules, the pieces have been carefully crafted to create a variety of schemes to suit a single, double or triple parklet space. The modular set allows for various combinations to be made to suit a business's needs.

Treating the parklet like a Ribbon, we fashioned a seamless sequence of zones that accommodated various activities, including dining, drinking and relaxing. Each parklet design is tailored to the specific requirements of each establishment, coordinating and amplifying its streetfront character. Depending on the proprietor's preferences, a parklet might be comprised of a bar area and room for business seating arrangements primarily.
Board-formed concrete faces the street, while smooth concrete textures the interior. An optional steel armature and light-tensioned fabric provide shade
